Introduction
If this is your baby's first Halloween, you want it to be special. Selecting an adorable costume can be a great way for you to enjoy the holiday. Your baby really won't care what they look like, so this is one time in your child's life that you can pick the costume. By kindergarten those days will be long behind you.
Step 1: Safety
The most important thing about a baby Halloween costume is not that it be cute, but that it be safe. There are several things you should thing about.
- Babies have tender skin, so you want to avoid any type of face paint or make up.
- Even newborns put their fingers in their mouths, so avoid gloves, and make sure sleeves are no longer than 3/4 length.
- Be careful to avoid dangling strings that could be a choking hazard.
- Avoid sewing small decorations on which could fall or be picked off.
Step 2: Simple Costumes
Baby sleepers and pajamas are great choices to base a costume on. Top a red sleeper with a green hat, and you have a apple. An orange sleeper with that same green hat is a pumpkin-- and purple could be grapes. You can use nontoxic fabric markers to add details.
Some sleepers have animal prints, so think giraffe, zebra, or dalmation. You can sew appropriate ears onto the cap to complete the theme.
Step 3: More Involved Costumes
- Make a mermaid tail to fit over the baby's legs.http://secret-agent-josephine.com/blog/2006/04/07/my-little-merbaby/ This is best for a very young baby who isn't mobile yet.
- You can use white craft foam to make an egg shell that slips over a yellow onesie and tights.http://www.flickr.com/photos/christykilgorehadley/49733847/
- Sew a circle of tulle onto a pink onesie for a ballet tutu.
